Anti-Salmon Farming Ads Dismissed

CANADA - British Columbia salmon farmers have dismissed an advertising campaign by an anti-fish farming organisation as immature and irrelevant.

The ads from the newly formed Global Alliance Against Industrial Aquaculture compare salmon farming with smoking.

However, Mary Ellen Walling, B.C. Salmon Farmers Association executive director, told Canada.com that although the advertisements were upsetting the organisation was not planning to respond.

She said: "We think they are quite immature, inappropriate and irrelevant. We are not taking them seriously at all."

The Salmon Farmers Association has a website — bcsalmonfacts.ca — on which there is good dialogue on salmon farming, Walling said.

The reports says that major B.C. salmon farming companies and feed companies have pooled resources with the association and are running television and print advertisements emphasising farmed salmon as sustainable and healthy food.
