Aquaculture Comes to Larne Lough

IRELAND, UK - A management plan for the development of aquaculture in Larne Lough was launched this week.

According to LarneTimes, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) launched the Co-ordinated Local Aquaculture Management System (CLAMS) document on Monday at an event in the Highways Hotel, attended by local shellfish producers and representatives from a number of local and commercial interests who were consulted during the development of the plan.

DARD Fisheries Director Liam McKibben explained that sustainable aquaculture development is a priority for the Department, says the news agency.

Mr McKibben is reported to have said: "I believe this CLAMS Plan provides an important resource as it combines information on the Lough's physical characteristics, history and environmental status with important biological data. It also sets the context for aquaculture activity in the Lough while recognising the interests of other users."
