Aquaculture gains popularity in North Carolina

FAYETVILLE, NC - Tobacco and cotton arent the only crops associated with North Carolina the state also has catfish and bass farms.

If it sounds funny, it shouldn’t. Aquaculture, or fish farming, is a growing industry in the state, said Matt Parker, an aquaculture business specialist with the state’s Department of Agriculture.

Parker is a spokesman for the 2007 North Carolina Aquaculture Development Conference, which will take place Feb. 9-10 at the Sheraton Atlantic Beach Oceanfront Hotel in Atlantic Beach.

The conference is designed for people interested in learning more about fish farming and those already in the business who are looking to network and improve their skills.

With more than 200 fish farms raising everything from trout to tilapia, North Carolina — with its abundant farmland and temperate climate — is ripe for the industry.
