The investigation was initiated after many farmers in 2015 reported increased mortality of lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus).

The study was done on the basis of the material submitted to the Institute during January-November 2015, as well as a survey and in-depth interviews with fish health workers that provided information from large parts of the Norwegian coast.

The results are now available in the report Acute mortality lumpfish, indicating that bacterial disease make up the bulk of the problems related to mortality in lumpfish in Norway after sea. Of these atypical furunculosis the disease that causes the highest mortality.
