Call to meet challenges to aquaculture

INDIA - Asian countries need to take proper measures to save aquaculture in the region, says Dillip Kumar, Director and Vice-Chancellor of Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai.

Almost 90 per cent of world aquaculture was being done in Asian countries only, but without action to protect the industry, imports would increase and local business will suffer, said a report in The Hindu.

Mr Kumar that the aquaculture industry faced a few challenges, among them technical feasibility, economic viability, social acceptability and environment.

His remarks were made during the second day of the national workshop on `New directions and dimensions of Aquaculture and Fisheries&rsquo, organised by Adikavi Nannaya University.
