Castlemaine Shellfish Producers Organise Harbour Clean Up

Clams Oysters +3 more

IRELAND - Shellfish producers in Castlemaine Harbour, Co. Kerry joined together recently under the Coordinated Local Aquaculture Management Systems or (C.L.A.M.S) initiative to organise a clean up of the harbour area in conjunction with Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), the Seafood Development Agency.

C.L.A.M.S groups are located all around the Irish coast and were set up by BIM to introduce the concept of Single Bay Management. Castlemaine Harbour C.L.A.M.S group consists of locals producing a variety of shellfish including bottom mussels, oysters and clams.

Maintaining a tidy and clean foreshore has always been a priority for all the aquaculture producers in Castlemaine Harbour.

"The commitment of aquaculture producers to the maintenance of their pristine working environment is self evident and this organised clean up through their local C.L.A.M.S group further demonstrates the respect local producers have for their working environment," commented Catherine Butler, BIM Aquaculture Officer.
