Creative Salmon Honoured For Suing Staniford

SCOTLAND - A Tofino-area salmon farm has been short-listed for an international award after it sued and won a defamation suit against a well-known environmentalist.

Aquaculture Today, an industry publication, has announced that the Creative Salmon Company Ltd. will compete against four other nominees in the Contribution to Aquaculture Category of the Fit for the Future Awards.

The awards ceremony will take place in Edinburgh, Scotland April 18.

Last month, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Laura Gerow ordered Don Staniford, a former anti-aquaculture campaigner for the Friends of Clayoquot Sound, to pay court costs and $15,000 in damages for defaming Creative Salmon in two June 2005 press releases.

“I applaud Creative Salmon for taking the stance that it has, as during Don Staniford’s time working for the Salmon Farm Protest Group in Scotland, I believe there were occasions when the industry felt that it was bedeviled by often ill-informed criticism which did not serve to advance debate,” said Sid Patten, chief executive of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation.
