An estimated 420,000 hectares in the southern provinces of Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang are being used to raise shrimp, 80,000 hectares fewer than last year.
According to Tra Vinh’s Agriculture and Rural Development Department, 13,600 hectares of shrimp farms have been infected with disease.
The situation is the same in Kien Giang Province, where 43,000 hectares of shrimp ponds are similarly afflicted.
There has been a decrease of nearly 3,000 hectares of shrimp breeding farms in Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue provinces.
Large numbers of shrimp continue to die every day because of diseases such as the MBV virus, commonly known as white-dot disease.
Disease Hits Shrimp Farms
VIET NAM - Shrimp output in Viet Nam is expected to fall this year as a result of a reduction in breeding farms and outbreaks of serious diseases, according to sources at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
