EU Finalises Fishing Agreement with Mauritius

SPAIN - The Council of Ministers of the European Union at a meeting of ECOFIN, has finally ratified the Partnership Agreement in the fisheries sector and the Protocol between the European Union and the Republic of Mauritius.

The agreement was signed in February 2012, but due to disagreements over its legal basis, a conclusion on the decision had not been adopted so far.

The Protocol, with a duration of three years, will operate 22 tuna seiners and 12 longliner vessels of Spain's Basque and Galicia regions.

Apart from the newly ratified agreement with Mauritius, the EU has existing fisheries agreements with the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean, Madagascar, Mozambique and the Comoros from which the Spanish fishing sector benefits.
