Film highlights vital role of wrasse in salmon aquaculture

A new film by Scottish Sea Farms illustrates the development of the use of wrasse to pick parasites off salmon in marine pens.

The film explains how Scottish Sea Farms have successfully collaborated with a number of partners, including Marine Harvest Scotland, Machrihanish Marine Labs and the University of Stirling, to instigate an extensive wrasse breeding project.

The £2 million R&D project is centred at Machnrihanish, in Argyll, and the new film a number of marine biolgists and fish husbandrymen explain how the wrasse are used and the positive implications – both environmental and financial – that the use of wrasse as cleanerfish can offer.
