"This is your profession and it will be wise to make it profitable".
He said this at the formation of the Damgbe West District Fish Farmers Association at Dodowa. The fisheries sub-sector plays an important role in the economy, contributing about 5 per cent of agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
"The total annual fish production in the country is currently about 400,000 tonnes representing 85 per cent which comes from the marine and the inland fisheries including aquaculture".
Mr.Nortey said the government is aware of some of the problems in the industry including post harvest losses, high cost of inputs and unavailability of credits. He said to overcome these problems, it was important to provide credit facilities to support the sub-sector.
Fish farmers urged to refrain from unhelpful practices
GHANA - The District Chief Executive Officer of the Damgbe West District Assembly Mr. Michael Teye-adjowera Nortey has urged fish farmers in the district to work hard and desist from all negative practices.
