Fisheries Sector Falls Short

MOZAMBIQUE - The Mozambique fisheries sector saw production fell short of forecast figures by nearly a third.

The fisheries ministry had predicted production of 1,300 tonnes in 2007, but this fell to 907 tonnes.

Much of the production, 1,200 tonnes, was expected to come from shrimp, but this fell short by a wide margin. The rest was made up of seaweed and freshwater fish.

The fisheries ministry said that production fell by 15 per cent compared to 2006 with shrimp reaching just 58 per cent of the target at 693 tonnes.

In value, production fell by eight per cent to US$6 million.
