Fishermen oppose Swedish salmon farm schemes

Atlantic Salmon Environment +2 more

Plans to establish two submersible salmon farms in the Kattegat, off western Sweden, have come under fire from fishermen’s representatives.

Maritima Odlingståget aims to produce 400 tonnes of salmon at each site, using submerisbe cages to help protect the fish and the structures during storms.

According to Göteborgs-Posten, fishermen’s objections include possible impacts on dwindling native salmon and sea trout stocks should any of the salmon escape, as well as concerns about the benthic impacts of nitrogen and phosphorus from fish waste and uneaten feed beneath the pens.
