Fishing Ban to Save Extinct Salmon Species

JAPAN - A fishermen's organisation in Japan is to establish a "no fishing" zone on Lake Saiko in a bid to protect a species of salmon that was though to be extinct.

A report in the Mainichi Daily News says that the "kunimasu," which used to be found living only in Lake Tazawa in Akita Prefecture, is currently still listed by the Ministry of the Environment as extinct.

However reserachers have identified the fish in Lake Saiko, near Mount Fuji in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture.

A meeting this week decided to establish a no fishing zone in the north of the lake where the fish have been found after a fgishing ban on kokanee - a type of salmon - is lifted in March next year.
