Gulf Fishery Consultation Closes Soon

Sustainability +1 more

AUSTRALIA - Act fast to have your say on the Gulf of Carpentaria fishery review.

Fisheries Queensland resource manager Mark Lightowler said there had been a good response from the fishing sector on the consultation so far.

"But there is still time for people to provide feedback before the consultation closes on 1 November.

"The Gulf of Carpentaria is a diverse fishery comprising of commercial, recreational, Indigenous and charter fishing sectors," Mr Lightowler said.

"To ensure we get the balance of interests right and maintain the fisheries’ sustainability we need all of our stakeholders to have their say."

Mr Lightowler said the proposed management arrangements included:

  • restructuring the net fishery outside seven nautical miles to improve economic efficiency and reduce the complexity of management arrangements;

  • amending the timing of the seasonal closure in the fishery for simplification and equitability;

  • changing the by-product limits that apply to the commercial net fishery

  • changing current possession and size limits for some species;

  • changing the way that some regulated waters are described.

"Stakeholders can download the information paper and response form from http://www.deedi.qld.gov.au/ or phone 13 25 23 to get a copy.
