Holiday Cruisers Get a Taste of BC Salmon Farming

CANADA - British Columbia salmon farmers continue to look for innovative ways to spread the positive news about their sustainable farming operations. Earlier this month, Regent Seven Seas Cruises pulled in to Campbell River for the first time at the newly constructed cruise ship facility and were greeted by First Nations dancers and signal beach fires.

Campbell Riverites passengers disembarked and for many it was their first time in British Columbia, Canada.

Building on the success of the weekly summer salmon farm tours, BC salmon farmers have extended an invitation to the cruise ship visitors. Guests for the first cruise tour came from Boston, New York, Texas and New Mexico. Following a 45 minute boat ride through scenic waterways, circumnavigating beautiful Quadra Island, the visitors disembarked at Cyrus Rocks farm, a Marine Harvest facility. Farm staff welcomed the guests and and explained the process of farming salmon from start to finish.

“The tours are a great way to show people how we make a living in small coastal communities and provide them with a great product they can eat back home.” said Stacey Stokes, of BC Salmon Farmers Association (BCSFA).”

And a tour wouldn’t be complete without a taster. Guests were presented with delicious smoked salmon nuggets from BCSFA member, Hardy Buoys Seafood.

Comments included: “I had no idea the industry was this big”, “It’s so clean and I love watching the salmon jump”, “It is so beautiful here, the fish must love it.”
