Huge Seas Ground New South Wales Fishing Fleet

Sustainability +1 more

AUSTRALIA - The New South Wales fishing fleet is waiting for the seas to calm down before starting work again after high waves kept them in port.

This week's east coast low forced fishing boats to head to port because it was dangerous at sea, reports ABCRural.

Fritz Drenkahn fishes the state's southernmost port of Eden, where fishing stopped due to eight-metre waves.

"Definitely just too dangerous," he said.

"NSW Maritime say you are the skipper and you are responsible, and it is the skipper's call, because that is the biggest problem the skipper has, he has to take his crew to sea safely and bring them back safely.

"Normally anything over about four metres, you just don't want to be there."
