Marine Harvest (Scotland) Ltd has applied for permission for a licence to operate a new 2,500 tonne salmon farm off the east coast of the island of Scalpay, near Skye.

If granted the Controlled Activities Regulations (CAR) licence will enable the company to operate 12 x 120 m circumference pens at a maximum biomass of 2,500 tonnes within a 75m x 70m mooring matrix.

Scalpay lies between Skye and the Scottish mainland and the application for the site also seeks permission to use a number of therapeutants against sea lice – bath treatments Cypermethnn, Deltamethrin and Azamethiphos, as well as the in-feed medicine Emamactin Benzoate.

AutoDepomod modelling has been performed to indicate that the development will adhere to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency’s Environmental Quality Standards (EQS).
