Marine Management Organisation Established

Politics

UK - The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has been established as an executive non-departmental public body under the Marine and Coastal Access Act. The MMO brings together, for the first time in one organisation, the majority of marine decision-making powers and delivery mechanisms.

The MMO has incorporated the work of the Marine and Fisheries Agency (MFA) and has acquired several important new roles, principally marine-related powers and specific functions previously associated with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and the Department for Transport (DfT).

It will work closely with a range of organisations and stakeholders in delivering functions on marine planning, marine licensing, nature conservation and fisheries management and enforcement issues.

Chief Executive of the MMO, Steven Gant, said: ‘This is an important day for the sustainable development of our seas. We aim to provide exemplary levels of delivery and public service in the marine area through a truly integrated approach to marine management.’

Hilary Benn added: ‘The MMO will bring cohesion, consistency and clarity to the management of marine activities and become a world class leader in this area. I wish it every success.’

The MMO consists of a headquarters in Newcastle and an integrated chain of 18 coastal offices around the coast of England.
