Measuring Redfish in the Pelagic Zone

NORWAY - The first international survey on beaked redfish (Sebastes mentella) in the Norwegian Sea has started on the 11 August. The survey is designed to measure the horizontal and vertical distribution and to provide an abundance estimate for the redfish stock in the pelagic zone.

According to the Institute of Marine Research, scientists onboard three commercial trawlers from the Faeroes, Russia and Norway are joining effort to cover the 850,000 km2 area. The survey is coordinated by Benjamin Planque at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR). The results will be analyzed during September and reported to the North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).
