Ministry moves towards sustainable aquaculture

VIETNAM - The Ministry of Fisheries organised a conference in the northeastern city of Ha Long on October 9-10 to discuss ways to develop aquaculture in coastal areas in a sustainable manner.

According to the ministry, aquaculture such as raising caged fish, lobsters, seaweed, bivalve molluscs and oysters for pearls has developed rapidly in recent years, particularly in coastal provinces such as Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Nghe An, Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen and Ba Ria-Vung Tau, creating jobs for hundreds of thousands of local people.

However, the practice has encountered many difficulties including inadequate investment capital, high risks, obsolete aquaculture technology, lack of fry and dependence on weather conditions. The fish output raised at sea has so far reached just 3,508 tonnes or two percent of the target set for 2010.
