New Bill Toughens Regulation of Illegal Fishing Gear

Environment Politics +1 more

SPAIN - A new bill seeks to eliminate the importation, marketing, distribution, use, possession, transportation, manufacturing and storage of arts illegal fishing and the ban on the use of fishing gear that destroys marine ecosystems.

The illegal fishing gear are those tools, tackle and fishing nets that do not meet the specifications and measures permitted in accordance with the regulations established.

In Costa Rica it is forbidden to use nets with a mesh hole of less than three inches, however, studies in the Gulf of Nicoya found that most networks that are used have a mesh size of 2.5 inches or smaller.

"There is a loophole that prevents illegal fishing gear from being confiscated at the moment they are being used. This proposal will be in place, whether they are in boats moored on the beach or in commercial premises," explained the deputy Venegas Renauld.

Supporters of the project are concerned about the uncontrolled use of illegal fishing gear and have requested on several occasions, in the media, that the Government take urgent action to end the use of illegal fishing gear.
