New boss winning respect in NZ aquaculture

NEW ZEALAND - Aquaculture's new boss has brought optimism and enthusiasm to the industry. Nick Churchouse reports.

Mike Burrell is a small fish making his way in the fast-expanding pond that is New Zealand's marine farming industry.

Fresh-faced, enthusiastic and excited about the challenges that lie ahead, the head of newly formed New Zealand Aquaculture has had to battle a few scarred and sceptical old timers to win respect in the turbulent aquaculture arena.

Less of a minnow every day, Mr Burrell entered a new stage in his career last week as the successor to the battle-hardened aquaculture gentry.

Mr Burrell is a West Coaster done good, with a bevy of academic qualifications and a prestigious resume covering international development and aid positions around the Pacific.

The new job, as chief executive of the industry body set up to take aquaculture into the future, is one he has been looking forward to, mostly because he can see big things.
