Officials Investigate Marine Fish Kill Event in Australia

Sustainability +1 more

AUSTRALIA - The Department of Fisheries in Western Australia has been investigating a marine fish kill event at South Beach and nearby beaches, North Coogee.

Following a report of 100 to 1,000 dead starfish at South Beach on Monday, Fisheries and Marine Officers visited South Beach and nearby beaches on Monday and Tuesday to assess the situation and collect samples. Less than 200 dead starfish were observed.

The samples have been sent to the department’s Fish Health unit for analysis. Results may take some time depending on the tests being undertaken.

No other dead aquatic animals have been reported or sighted.

The department said it will continue to monitor the area over the coming days and respond to enquiries.

As with all fish kills, the authorities recommend as a precaution people do not collect, handle, or move any dead starfish.
