Oyster herpesvirus is a virulent viral disease of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas, also known as the rock or cupped oyster). This is the only species of shellfish that is currently known to be susceptible to this virus.

There are no implications for human health: the virus only affects Pacific oysters.

Oyster herpesvirus is a notifiable disease in England and Wales. As such, shellfish producers/operators must apply to the Fish Health Inspectorate to move any live shellfish into or out of the designated area.
