Praising Nutritional Qualities of Farmed Salmon

CANADA - The British Columbia Salmon Farmers Association has welcomed fresh reports praising the nutritional advantages of farmed salmon.

"If you haven't been eating farmed salmon, consider these figures: a 6 oz. portion of farmed Atlantic salmon contains 3,650 milligrams of DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids compared to 300 mg in two Omega-3 eggs," the BC Salmon Farmers Association said.

The association has pointed to an article written by dietician Samara Felesky-Hunt and published in the Calgary Herald highlighting farmed salmon as an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids.

"The article reviews recommendations from the American Dietetic Association and Dieticians of Canada which state adults should consume 500 mg of long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids each day," the association added.

"Additionally, Felesky-Hunt says that farmed Atlantic salmon 'is a good source of many vitamins such as vitamin A, B and D. It also contains minerals such as iodine, iron, zinc and phosphorus'."
