Protect Wild Salmon And Salmon Farming

Salmonids Politics +1 more

CANADA - Election campaigns are an important time for people to ask potential representatives about the issues that are most important to them, writes the British Columbia Salmon Farmers Association (BCSFA).

Often, in British Columbia, topics related to the environment are top of mind. It is a focus for many of us to see our natural surroundings protected and enhanced.

Also important is economic stability and community growth - particularly for those of us living and working in more rural communities, such as Vancouver Island's north coast.

While we agree that questions need to be posed and clear responses given - all of the information about an issue needs to be shared in order for candidates and the public to form a reasoned decision.

In response to a recent effort to pressure candidates into statements based on misleading information and incomplete explanations, the BC Salmon Farmers Association has sent a letter to each candidate in BC responding to misinformation and explaining the current situation of salmon farming in our province.

Well-regulated farms can operate alongside healthy wild salmon populations: protecting the environment while enabling business will require strong leadership from our federal representatives. We look forward to working with whoever is elected to represent our operating areas and our province.
