SA abalone industry fears virus widespread

AUSTRALIA - South Australia's Fishing Industry Council says it is possible a deadly virus infecting Victorian abalone stocks could already be in South Australia.

The ganglioneuritis virus was found in four Victorian abalone farms late last year.

A control site was set up to monitor the level of infection.

Michael Tokley from the Abalone Council says the virus has spread about 500 metres outside that area.

"The concerns are that if it does spread into South Australia, it would have a devastating effect on the abalone stocks in the southern zone of our state," he said.
