SAGARPA Commits to Responsible Tuna Fishing

Sustainability Politics +2 more

MEXICO - In order to induce the responsible and sustainable fishing of tuna whilst protecting dolphin populations, the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) published specifications for the operation of the purse seine fishing fleet, which will take effect from 17 March 2014.

This Mexican Official Standard is to establish the terms and conditions for tuna fishing vessels equipped with purse seine in order to induce the sustainable use of these resources, minimising dolphin mortality.

Tunas are a highly migratory species with a distribution range extending beyond the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Mexico. So, to ensure its sustainable use and to support the conservation of dolphin populations, international cooperation is needed.
