Suminoe oyster is no threat to NC

NORTH CAROLINA - Blue crabs sure go for those Asian oysters. That's one reason the Suminoe oyster (Crassostrea ariakensis) likely would never become invasive in North Carolina waters even if some escaped from aquaculture operations into the wild, oyster expert Charles Peterson told the Marine Fisheries Commission last week.

"It doesn't mean the oyster couldn't become established. It means that there won't be a lot of adults to reproduce," said Peterson, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Institute of Marine Sciences.
