University project nets fish farming success

ILLINOIS - The North Atlantic's environment can be extreme and unforgiving, an ideal setting to test the viability of fish farming.

Advances in fish production technologies at the University of New Hampshire were presented by Richard Langan, Cooperative Institute for New England Mariculture and Fisheries Open Ocean Aquaculture Program director at UNH, to a delegation of Illinois Soybean Association directors, staff, industry partners and media.

The project explores the environmental soundness, technological feasibility and economic viability of farming finfish and shellfish in the Gulf of Maine.

Founded in 1998 and in partnership with the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, this interdisciplinary project combines innovative engineering design, progressive fish husbandry techniques, advanced communications technology, rigorous environmental assessment and extensive community outreach.
