Wine, shrimp, trout suggested as farming alternatives

US - Will vineyards one day dot hills in Pulaski County, attracting tourists and wine connoisseurs? And will these visitors join residents in eating locally grown shrimp and trout?

The Virginia Cooperative Extension service is encouraging residents to explore these alternative farm enterprises -- a meeting on vineyard possibilities was held Tuesday and an aquaculture meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at New River Community College's Edwards Hall.

Pulaski extension agent Michael Fisher said he has had numerous inquiries about both activities in the past year.

John White, Pulaski's economic development coordinator, is enthusiastic about both. He believes they can help the area become more involved in the trend to agritourism, or agriculture operations that attract tourists.
