Acoustic System Expels Sea Lions

Salmonids Welfare +2 more

CHILE - With sea lion attacks on the Chilean salmon industry costing US$77 million a year, Salmo Divers has developed an acoustic system to deter the animals.

Acoustic systems were previously used in the eighties, Hector Vera, the general manager of Salmo Divers, told FishFarmingExpert.com. However, they were discredited due to failure, which Mr Vera believes is due to inappropriate use by non-qualified personnel and sea lions becoming accustomed to the sounds.

Based on those premises and on different successful trials along the Chilean coast, Mr Vera stated that his company will now offer the use of acoustic systems, operated by his qualified personnel and during the three to four months prior to harvest.

"One of the farming sites lost 80 harvest size salmons monthly, using the equipment can decrease that figure close to zero," he added, explaining that his acoustic system saves about $22,000 monthly on each farming site.
