Agriculture school starts fisheries programme

GUYANA - The Guyana School of Agriculture's (GSA) fisheries programme is aiming to promote its development and the aquaculture industry to maximise the country's production capacity for marine produce.

The Government Information Agency (GINA) said that the GSA is now involved in the government's agriculture diversification thrust and is training people to work in the industry.

GSA Principal Lynette Cunha said the institution will now offer a Certificate in Fisheries, with the emphasis on aquaculture, in the new school term. Hopefully a maximum of 20 students will train, annually.

The courses will include Fisheries, Biology, Marine and Inland Water Biodiversity and Global Fisheries as well as English Language and Mathematics. Students are also expected to be involved in the building of ponds, developing boatmanship, pond fertilisation techniques and fish stock management
