Aquaculture Thrives in Newfoundland

CANADA - Neighbouring provinces are being given some of the credit for the substantial growth in this province's aquaculture industry.

The aquaculture industry in this province is thriving and contributing to many rural communities, and Miranda Pryor with Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association says neighbouring provinces are playing an important role.

Pryor says this province is benefiting from the experience, expertise and science from the other Maritime provinces.

She says Newfoundland has the site capacity to become the largest producer of aquaculture products in Canada, which in turn would bring related economic activity and over a thousand jobs to dozens of communities along our coasts.

Pryor says experienced, well established aquaculture companies from throughout Canada are investing in growth of the Atlantic salmon and Steelhead trout industries throughout the Coast of Bays region.

She pointed out these companies are focused on sustainability for both the environment and the industry.
