CANADA A new shellfish research centre in Deep Bay will soon be under construction with the help of an $8.5-million investment.

The announcement by the federal and provincial governments came Wednesday, writes Kristi Dobson for the WestCoaster.

According to the report, the research centre will create up to 60 full-time construction jobs, 15 full-time research jobs, diversify the Lighthouse Area economy and eventually triple shellfish industry production to $100 million annually.

Dianne St. Jacques, Liberal candidate for Alberni-Pacific Rim, told the WestCoaster that the investment is an encouraging boost to the B.C. shellfish industry.

This investment not only provides a real shot in the arm to the economy of Deep Bay and the Lighthouse Area, it will also showcase British Columbias burgeoning shellfish aquaculture industry to the entire world, said St. Jacques.
