Farmed Fish Invited to Come Dancing

Health Welfare Post-harvest +3 more

SCOTLAND - Glasgow-based New Zealander Sunil Kadri has scooped the O2 X Male Entrepreneur of The Year Award in London recently. Co-founder of Optoswim Technologies, Mr Kadri is a marine biologist and fish behaviour expert who explores technologies to enhance fish farming.

Optoswim Technologies Ltd has developed an innovative technology to improve production of salmon and other fish in aquaculture.

Dubbed the 'fish disco' or 'fish gym' – the technology comprises of an LED matrix which encourages regular swimming in farmed fish. Mr Kadri explains that “essentially it’s a system for providing exercise to fish in farms. This encourages the development of muscle over fat – leading to leaner, healthier and tastier fish.”

Optoswim products are installed in seacages and tanks used in fish farms throughout the world and work by using a specially configured LED light matrix to stimulate optimal swimming speeds in the fish.

This brings the benefits of exercise to aquaculture, including:
  • faster more efficient growth of stock for the farmer,
  • improved flesh quality for the consumer
  • better health and welfare for the fish
OTL has been in operation since October 2007 and its technology is the very first of its kind to be offered to the fish farming industry.

Mr Kadri has received worldwide interest in the product and is determined to make sure it is robustly tested before it is released into the commercial marketplace.
