Indonesia Aims to Be Number One Fish Producer

Economics +1 more

INDONESIA - Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Minister, Fadel Muhammad believes that Indonesia should become the world's largest producer of fish and fish products by 2012.

"Indonesia must become a centre of fish and fish products, so that we can control the world's fish trade," Minister Muhammad said in Gorontalo, reports The Jakarta Post.

Mr Muhammad said that Indonesia's fish and marine resources are the largest in the world, and therefore, it is logical that Indonesia should increase its production dramatically.

He said his ministry has targeted a 300 per cent increase in the country's fish and fish products by next year.

Nevertheless, he said, his office would need to get budget support from the House of Representatives to finance its many programmes.
