Research Centre Looks for Prawn Alternatives

AUSTRALIA - Aquaculture facilities at the National Marine Science Centre in northern NSW have been upgraded to commercial hatchery and research standards.

The Federal Government's Sustainable Regions Program funded the new North Coast Mariculture and Re-seeding Centre at Coffs Harbour, according to ABC.

The centre's director Professor Alistair McIlgorm says the centre will investigate the commercial potential of mulloway and opportunities for the north coast prawn industry.

"We're working with the prawn farmers in the Yamba area to actually help them to replace prawns, in that basically cheap imports have made prawns less viable and they're looked for new diversifed opportunities," he says.
