Scottish Fish Jump as Russian Ban Ends

Economics Politics +2 more

UK - The Scottish fishing industry has been given a 40 million boost after Russia agreed to end its ban on imports of herring and mackerel landed north of the border.

The Press and Journal have revealed that in April, following a row with Westminster’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), Vladimir Putin’s government imposed widespread restrictions on importing pelagic fish from Britain.

According to The Press and Journal, the decision, which was taken amid growing tensions between the UK and Russia over the murder of former agent Alexander Litvinenko, came as a huge blow to the seafood industry, for which Russia is a crucial market.
