SCOTLAND, UK - Scottish fishermen have welcomed the support from the Scottish Government on unfounded claims that mackerel is not being fished sustainably.

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) said yesterday that it has removed mackerel from its latest version of the fish to eat list.

However, the Scottish Government has come out in support of Scottish mackerel catchers, underlining that the fishery is sustainable.

Ian Gatt, chief executive of the Scottish Pelagic Fishermens Association, said: We welcome this support from the Scottish Government and also their continuing support in the ongoing mackerel fishing dispute with Iceland and the Faroes, who are irresponsibly overfishing mackerel. As the Scottish Government has pointed out, the mackerel stock is being fished sustainably at the moment and in line with the latest science.
