SFF Raises Fishing Industry Concerns

Sustainability Economics Politics +4 more

SCOTLAND, UK - The Scottish Fishermens Federation held an informal meeting in Edinburgh with Owen Paterson, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, to discuss a range of fishing issues and to provide an overview of the main areas of concern for the industry.

Issues raised included the severe economic pressures currently being endured by the Scottish fleet and the ongoing dispute with Iceland and the Faroes due to their over-fishing of the north-east Atlantic mackerel stock,

Bertie Armstrong, chief executive of the SFF said: "This proved a very useful meeting and was very much an informal discussion session to enhance and build upon our relationship with the Secretary of State.

"Mr Paterson is notable for when as a shadow minister in 2005 he wrote a highly critical paper on the numerous defects of the Common Fisheries Policy, which contained many recommendations that today are widely recognised as perceived wisdom, including the promotion of selective fishing gears and real time area closures to protect spawning and juvenile stocks."
