The Chief Aquaculture Officer at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Alex Meloti, says there is potential for both export and import substitution of aquaculture farming products and the government needs to recognise its importance, reports Radio New Zealand International.

Mr Meloti says officials from his division have been touring parts of the country identifying suitable areas for farm development.

He says aquaculture needs good fishing methods, infrastructure and markets for the industry to thrive in Solomon Islands.
