Sustainable Development Of Whiteleg Shrimp

Economics +1 more

VIET NAM - Whiteleg shrimp was introduced into Binh Dinh in 2004. Since then production has gradually increased. In 2010, farming of whiteleg shrimp in this area accounted for 883 hectares, 32 per cent of the total farmed area.

Production has reached over 5,325 metric tons, accounting for 85 per cent of total provincial commercial shrimp production. Some farming areas had a high yield of 12 metric tons per hectare.

Mr Vo Dinh Tam, head of the sub-Department of Aquaculture said that as soon as whiteleg shrimp was introduced into Binh Dinh, the provincial fisheries sector farmed whiteleg shrimp in a sustainable and environmental friendly manner. Besides, shrimp farmers must strictly control the quality of broodstock prior to farming and strengthen the management and care for shrimp.
