PHILIPPINES - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has warned the public not to catch or eat shellfish from some coastal waters due to the presence of harmful algal bloom (red tide) toxins.

The ban also includes alamang. The affected coastal waters are: Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur, Sibuguey Bay in Zamboanga Sibugay and Limay, Orion, Del Pilar, Orani, Balanga, Abucay and Samal in Bataan.

BFAR Director Asis de Perez stressed that shellfish from these areas are not safe for human consumption.

Meanwhile, fish, squids, shrimps and crabs from said areas are safe for consumption but should be washed thoroughly and internal organs removed before cooking.
