Meeting Aims to Harmonise Fishing and Bird Protection

ARGENTINA - The Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture participated in the fifth meeting of the Working Group on Bycatch, as part of the seventh meeting of the Advisory Committee of the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP).

The Group's main objective is to mitigate and reduce the negative interaction between fishing operations and albatrosses and petrels.

During the meeting the topics covere included: recommendations, mitigation and best practices for each type of fishery (demersal and pelagic longline, trawl and gillnet), bycatch data collection, development of indicators, prioritisation of conservation actions, developing elements of technical information and progress in the implementation of national action plan.

It is noteworthy that, Argentina reported on the completion, in 2012, of the First Workshop Track National Action Plan to Reduce Bird Interaction with Fisheries (PAN BIRD) in Argentina.
