This growth was determined by higher landings of species for direct human consumption (DHC) which increased by 11.53 per cent. This is mainly because there was greater availability of hake and weakfish, among others.

The extraction of species for preparation of cured (175.21 per cent), such as as grouper and other fish and shellfish species also increased.

Landings of fish for the canning sector increased by 12.33 per cent, the highest being tuna, mackerel, bonito and machete.

Also, the extraction of species for indirect human consumption (meal and oil) increased by 27.15 per cent. This is due to higher anchovy catches in 2013 which reached more than 4,698,000 tons.
